Pelvic floor therapy in Lancaster, Ohio

Have you heard that I offer pelvic floor therapy in Lancaster, Ohio?

If you've been following along with me, chances are, you have! But if not, no problem! I am here to share what pelvic floor therapy at my office may look like!

The unknown is always a nerve wrecking place! What do I wear? What is going to happen? Is it going to be weird/painful/unpleasant?? I get it --I've been there before!

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a type of rehab therapy completed by a physical (PT) or occupational therapist (OT)—OT here!-- to address the pelvic floor muscles in the body. This can be to strengthen, relax or gain control over the pelvic floor muscles.

Why is this important? Well, they're responsible for controlling some pretty important things such as pee, poop and sex. Did I make your face red?! Listen, we all do it, so lets get comfy with talking about it, mmkay?!

But seriously, issues with the pelvic floor muscles may look like:

  • leaking pee with cough, sneeze or exercise

  • increased urgency (gotta go!!) with pee and/or poop

  • fecal smearing (will I ever be done wiping?!)

  • pain or discomfort with sex

  • vaginal heaviness/prolapse

  • diastasis recti or core weakness

We can also address getting bodies ready for improved fertility, birth outcomes and postpartum rehab!

What to expect during your first appointment

Evaluation Intake
After you schedule an initial evaluation, you will be sent intake paperwork to provide a brief snapshot of what is going on and past medical history.

These are little puzzle pieces that can be helpful in putting together the big picture. We always begin an evaluation by going over this together at the first appointment to clarify things and hear your story.

Evaluation Assessment
Once we have all of the intake info done, we begin the initial evaluation. Here we are looking at:

  • how you move

  • your body alignment

  • breathing patterns

  • range of motion

  • overall strength

This can include an internal assessment or an external assessment of the pelvic floor depending on your symptoms and your comfort level.

Evaluation Summary
Lastly, when we finish going over that portion, we sit down to go over your symptoms, what my findings tell me and what I think treatment will look like. This is where I will give you some things to work on at home. A home program may include:

  • Exercises

  • Stretches

  • bowel or bladder diaries

  • taking notes on how you do things at home

Of course, not everyone needs all of those things so it is individualized to each person and their specific symptoms.

My goal of every appointment is to make it as comfortable and easy as possible.

I believe a providing high quality care in a comfortable environment where my patients feel heard and understood are essential in providing pelvic floor therapy!
